Applying for British Citizenship.

Under 18 applying for british citizenship to british mother?

  • Hi, so i am under 18 and i want to apply for british citizenship before i turn 18 (in 2.5 months) because it is easier i think. My mum was born in the uk and lived there until she was 20 and so i was wondering what was would be the best to apply and which document etc. I have an australian passport at the moment and was wondering if i could get a dual passport? thanks

  • Answer:

You don't need to apply for citizenship as long as your mother was born in the UK to British parents. If this is the case, you are already British by descent and only need to apply for a British passport to exercise your citizenship. You will need your birth cert, photos, your mother's birth cert and her marriage cert if her name has changed. Here's all the details of how to apply for a British passport from Australia. http://ukinnewzealand.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/how-to-apply/australia There is no such thing as a dual passport. In your case you are a dual citizen entitled to carry either or both passports. You should use the British passport when travelling in Europe as it gives you visa free travel and residence in all 27 EEA countries. i.e. you don't need a visa to live, work or study there and there are no restrictions on the time you can spend as a visitor.
