If i win the green card lottery,should I marry my non us girlfriend?

  • My situation is little bit complicated, i applied the DV lottery last year and the result will be published on May 1.If i get the green card, i would like to take my girlfriend with me together. I am a nepali guy and she is chinese, i spent 5 years in china for medical university and we met each other other and spent 2 years together. Now i am back in nepal and she is living in china. My question is: Should i marry her before the interview? We need to deal with some paper work even for our marriage, so it takes some time. So when will be the interview time after i get informed that i win the lottery? Helpful answers are appreciated!

    well, if you want her to go with you any time soon, you'll need to marry before the interview. or at the very least before you get your visa and use it. otherwise, after you use it, you'll have to file an I-130 immigrant petition for her in the US and wait 2 1/2 years before she can use it. of course, if you marry shortly before or after your interview, there will be a fair number of questions about your relationship. if they think this is a sham marriage, then yes her visa and perhaps yours as well will be denied. that would still be true if you married tomorrow.

Remember, it's a lottery, most people don't win. You seem to think it's a certainty while it's not. I would recommend not to worry about it until you do win. But if you do win and you want her to go along it will be much easier if you get married before you get a greencard than after. You will have plenty of time to get married before you get called to an interview.
