How can I make money off my art?

Can you make MONEY in the art field?

  • Sorry I just asked a similar question.. but this is a little different I'm 15 (nearly 16) I'm a VERY good artist for my age. I've taught myself ALL of Photoshop CS5 without any help. I love drawing.. I do more commercial works and would like to pursue something like that... I enjoy drawing anime (no I'm not one of those kids who sits alone at lunch). I wouldn't be aiming for just doing the stupid stuff... but the GOOD stuff that is REALLY impressive. THAT is where I would want to go with my art if I pursued it as a career. I'd like to be able to do something like this one day http://th02.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2011/155/a/e/fortune_city_2160_001_by_redjuice999-d3i0xn7.jpg And don't be like "oh sweetie set a realistic goal", this is a very realistic goal for me. So this person is NOT freelance... I'm wondering... with art like that... IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE MONEY... GOOD MONEY... REALLY GOOD MONEY. I know this can sound awfully shallow... but.. I care about money, and I want to have a lot of it when I grow up. Because I want opportunities and I don't want to be like other people I know who are failures. Money IS something I WANT. Don't give me the "money isn't everything" speech, it's not going to change my mind. I want to meet my goals and expectations for myself. SO I'm wondering, really, can you make good money off or COMMERCIAL DIGITAL ART.. can you even be rich? If you can't, I would probably pursue law instead (it's something I'm also interested in), but there would always be a little part of me that was sad that I never went with art.. I don't want to rely on marrying a rich guy. I want to know that I'd be well off on my own (I DO want to get married though)... and if the guy I marry HAPPENS to be rich... then great.. but I don't want to be one of those people, therefore I don't want to rely on something like that. I'm kind of stressing out.. I'm going to be looking at colleges this summer and I need to start really thinking about this.

  • Answer:

Yes, there are jobs that pay artists for a lot of money. But that is years later, when you have lots of experience. When you first start something you will not get paid a lot of money, and that goes for almost all jobs. So you have to look realistically that you won't get paid high at young age until your older with experience. That's why most people that get higher pay are older most of the time. Also networking counts, without connections it'll be harder.

You would have to be really good, and sell a ton of your work in a short time. In short, no.
