Can dogs have allergies?

What can I do to ease my dogs allergies?

  • My 8 year old 9 lb Papillon has terrible seasonal allergies. His scratching has gotten out of control and he is miserable. We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I can do make him more comfortable until our appointment? I've tried children's benadryl, apple cider vinegar, oatmeal bath, and hydrocortisone spray with little to no relief. Until today he had mild itching occasionally but nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year. His breathing is fine, it's been gradually building up and he's always had seasonal allergies but with such a mild winter the pollen is terrible and his allergies are worse than ever before. Please no nasty responses-read this before you reply, I am going to the vet and he has been fine until just this morning. Thank you!

  • Answer:

Use a high quality vacuum with a HEPA filter, and use it. Keep other areas of your apt cleaner than normal to reduce dust and other dirt that irritate allergies..

Since you have an appointment tomorrow, I wouldn't do anything for tonight. Since benedryl didn't help, there's nothing else you should be doing on your own. Make sure your dog is on a very good flea product and that it isn't actually a flea issue. It could be fleas, even if you aren't seeing any. If your dog isn't on flea meds every 30 days, year 'round (in most places --I don't know where you are) then I would start that after getting your vet's advice on which product would help your dog most. Allergy can only be controlled and not cured. But there are many different types of medications your vet can try. We tend to use a lot of temaril P, which is a tiny bit of steroid, along with antihistamine for dogs. We get very good results with that, and our clients who are very complient are able to refill seasonally. You may try a fatty acid supplement. Your vet should have a good shampoo --oatmeal with no perfumes should work. Bathing in cool water is a good temporary fix. You could ask your vet about Science Diet Sensitive Skin food. Stick with your vet. Do everything he tells you. Return for your rechecks on time. And then you may be able to pick up the phone and call for refills without having to pay for a vet visit every time your dog starts itching again.

Have you tried dog allergy pills? They sell them at walmart, I believe by pro pet brand. Ive never personally used them but ive seen good reviews. Good luck.
