What's the best way for 1 person to lift a really heavy fish tank?

  • Heya, So I know that removing the water (most of it) helps, but even so it is still heavy, and i have to leave enough in for my fish because i can only take the fish out when i move the tank to a different place. I am one person and my fish tank is heavy (usually it takes my dad and my brother to lift it, especially because with two people it makes the actual lift and transition easier in terms of managing the tank). I have a rectangle tank, the main problem is that it is quite wide, on a higher level and it gets stuck to the bottom of the (windowsill like) surface...which is a concern. Any ideas on how one person can lift this..i am a strong 19 f but it is still dam heavy lol. P.s i have no one to help me, i may consider asking my neighbours since my dad has refused to. Any ideas? ---------------------- Rant: Please skip. Extra, basically I have had my fish for 11 years and every single time I have cleaned it out by my self, all i have ever asked my dad to do is move the tank and when i was younger also asked him to transfer my fish, the rest of everything i did myself. My fish tank hasn't been cleaned since september last year (I KNOW!!) It's not horrific but it needs cleaning clearly. Please don't judge me here since you don't know me, but my dad is the type of person who plays mind games and is just a jerk..he claims it doesn't need cleaning..when it clearly does, he says that i have to do it ....he's referring to moving the fish tank...what the hell- it takes him and my brother to lift is..all i'm asking him to do is move the tank there and back (after i have cleaned it). So skrew him, he does it just to get at me, i'll try my neighbours if they are in though :) rant: i put the fish stuff out this morning for me to clean the fish tank..he knows i am the one that always cleans it and yet he woke me up this morning typical him yelling at me for it claiming he was not going to do the fish tank (he 100% knows that i would never ask him to he just likes to play me with his words for reaction), grr. Soz for the rant, i just needed to get that minor thing off my chest lol :) Thank you for answering.

    Ask a neighbor or any guy friends you have I don't see a problem with that at all. I wound't do it yourself if you are not comfortable with the move you can injure yourself break your tank and kill the fish. Worst case scenario tell your neighbor you will give them a cheap dinner if they help.

It shouldn't really need a big clean. Water changes should be sufficient as long as the gravel is all cleaned with a vaccum siphon. But I would make sure you get help when lifting a large tank so you don't hurt yourself or damage your tank. Good luck!

I may have missed something here, but why does it need moving to clean it?? You NEVER clean a tank by cleaning it out totally. That leads to dead fish quickly. Water changes, syphon waste from bottom as you remove the water, and replace with water correctly treated. No more than 20% at a time. Get a water testing kit to check how much the tank really needs doing, and research online to see how your fishes behaviour is giving clues to how he is. Goldfish rapidly outgrown tanks as they are an incredibly dirty fish and need double filtration and regular water changes. Of course if you need to move the tank anyway for other reasons, then simply DONT alone!!! Get help!

When I have to do a complete clean of my tank I usually place my fish into a smaller spare tank I have. This allows me to remove all the water from the main tank so I can move it to be cleaned. Hope this helps. Out of curiosity, what size tank do you have and what kind of fish do you have?
