My cat Chester is dying of kidney failure. Anyone know how this happened?
-
Chester is still very young, 5 years I'd say. I noticed yesterday that she wasn't acting normal. She was sitting in the corner of my room behind my fridge, which she never does. I knew that animals sitting in corners like that was because they liked it or because they were sick or dying. She also was trying to meow but nothing was coming out (she loved to meow). She didn't even come to me when I called her. I told my mom to take her to the vet because I knew something was wrong because her mood had changed. My mom took her to the vet this morning and they said her kidneys were failing and they didn't know why. They are pumping fluid into her as we speak and I'm going to visit her soon. She is probably going to die. I just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone know how her kidneys could have failed at such a young age. I know I could have just gone to Google but I feel better writing all of this out. Thanks

Answer:
Same thing happened to one of my cats that passed away. There are a couple of things that can have an impact on their kidneys. One is feeding them HARD FOOD. Hard cat food is extremely bad for their kidneys and can cause kidney and renal failure on a cat. Try to stick with mostly moist cat food for your cats. And another is a lack of water. Kidneys need water to keep them working. Always keep a BIG BOWL of water available for your cat to drink at any time, and if you can get one of those cat fountains. Cats seem to like the sound of them, it encourages them to drink water. Im sorry. I know how you feel. There was nothing we could do for the cat except give it an IV of fluids every day until it eventually withered away and we had to put him to sleep. We had that cat for 16 years too.

If the vet did a blood test they could tell if there was a toxic cause to it. Did anyone double dose her with flea meds? Was she able to get into any chemicals? Was she outside and did a neighbor do a lawn treatment on their grass? This poisons squirrels, it will do the same to any cat exposed to the same chemical.
Hi Andy. I want you to know I feel your pain. In the last week of March my/out 13 year old maine Coon also was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. He stopped eating and drinking. He would still urinate but the piss was clear and all the toxin's that the kidney should filter out were left in his system. We also gave him fluids, but as and good vet will tell you this is a short term band-aid for a much bigger problem. We put him down because the quality of life was gone and feeding him through a syringe really could not be sustained. Sadly, my/out little "black cat" is dying of the same thing right now... symptoms are all exactly the same thing. It's been less than a month and unfortunately we have another decision to make. Black cat is about 17 years old so she has had a full life but it does not make it any easier. I am looking at her right now with tears and a heavy heart. To answer your question, no I do not know how this happened. It could be heredity or simply the luck of the draw... either way it sucks. I am so sorry for your situation but I will tell you this, if it looks terminal, do not let the cat suffer... you will only prolong both your pain. I know when "Scoops" was finally gone it felt like a weight was lifted. Yes, it hurt and he is still missed but it was the right thing to do. "Black Cat" has a vet appointment tomorrow, but I think that this office visit will turn into her departure. It hurts, believe me I understand. You might be buying some time with fluids but think about the bigger picture... the time you provide will be costly and you have to hope it is quality. I wish you the best, believe me I feel your pain.
