So, I moved into a new house and the living room has speakers in the ceiling but I dont know how to get them to work. There is a part in the wall with a cord sticking out of it that I assume you use to set it up but what do I plug into that cord? How do I get these speakers to work?

Answer:
A receiver or amplifier is required to power them.

A simple test to see if the wires comming out of the wall are connected to the speakers in the ceiling, Take any battery and tap the wires to + and - of the battery to each of the speaker wires. The speaker will make a "popping" static sound if they are connected up and working. This will not damage the speaker in anyway. If you get a sound, then you can go ahead and connect up your stereo. Question? Are they located behind you if you are positioned to watch a tv? If yes then they were most likley meant to be rear channel speakers for a surround sound theater.
