Does Roku 2 XS require FAT32 for external hard drives?

I am considering either Apple tv or Roku 2 xs, my main concern is the hard drive. I know Roku has more content to offer, but I would only use amazon and netflix on roku anyway. Does the Roku require an external hard drive to be formatted in FAT32, or can it be NTFS for higher bitrates? Especially if ripping blu ray, FAT32 would not work. It looks as though Roku can handle bit rates as high as 14 mbps, but in HD that would be maybe a 30 minute tv show due to size.

You can use either, but as you stated NTFS will parce and work faster. FAT32 is just safer to remove from Roku since it does not have an on/off button. I have 1TB of 1080 HD movies/shows on an external hard drive and the roku plays 2 plus hour blu ray movies without a problem.

Both are Internet streaming services. Meaning they have no hard drives and run on SSD temp memory chips. Each movie and tv show is downloaded from the vendors and played. Like Netflix. It buffers the program and downloads all 6GBs of the movie you're watching then plays. It's 3GBs per hour of a 1080i/p movie you're watching. They don't include external hard drive storages generally. Apple TV streams from your iTunes hard drive on the other computer via AirPlay download for example. Or through the iCloud download like Netflix.
