How to separate 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz signal?

Can i take advantage of a 5ghz dual band modem?

  • My wireless card is a 802.11h+d, which after some research, i believe is 5GHz capable. The dilemma im having is if i buy a dual band modem, does it matter which ISP i have? Right now i have a 30 MB charter plan but im not sure if i need to pay more for a 5GHz band or not. I also notice under the value for my wireless card, it has loose11h, loose11h+d, and strict11h, whats the difference with those? Can you get a better connection with one over the other? Also, should i buy a dual band modem and just use that, buy a dual band router as well, or just buy a dual band router and connect it to the current charter modem i have? It seems using a 5GHz router on a non 5GHz modem wouldn't do anything but technology works in weird ways sometimes. In other words, what would be the best setup for a fast, reliable connection? Thanks for all who help.

  • Answer:

Actually, the frequency of the wireless router doesn't have anything to do with the broadband modem it would be connecting to. The main reason dual-band routers came out is because the 2.4GHz spectrum that Wireless-G and Wireless-N devices operate on has become congested with lots of other consumer devices that also operate in that frequency range. The 5GHz spectrum is a bit less crowded right now so you don't have to worry about contention for wireless channels as much. The speeds are about the same between 5GHz and 2.4GHz as both can offer speeds up to 54Mb and Wireless-N can offer up to 150Mb and sometimes even 300Mb. At any rate, if your ISP's speed is 30Mb then pretty much any wireless router that offers Wireless-G or above would work just fine.
