How To Create Your Own Wapsite Or Website?

Should I create a website from scratch using dreamweaver/notepad (hmtl/css) or use wordpress/joomla/drupal?

  • Hi, I'll be doing my internship for a pharmaceutical company and they want me to create a website for them. I am going to create it from scratch and do just about everything (from getting the domain name and web host to actually managing the website). I have the background in html/css/php and the like but i only create the and use them locally (for school projects and stuffs) so Im kind of new to this "actually putting it up live on the internet". The company just wants to have the usual stuffs in their site like product info, company info, faq, feedback forms, etc. You know just the usual. So for this static website, should i just create the whole site using dreamweaver and notepad and just upload those pages to the host OR should i do it in wordpress and take it on from there? Im not that much familiar with wordpress / joomla / drupal or any other cms stuffs but I'm already doing some research and i really am eager to learn about these. And another thing, where do you think should i buy a domain name and get a web host? Right now what im thinking is get a domain name at go daddy and host this website at bluehost. Thanks very much for reading and hoping for your responses :)

  • Answer:

All those questions are what I do for a living: Either GoDaddy.com or 1and1.com are cheap and have superior domain name management. GoDaddy has a slight edge. Just don't be pulled into their upselling, buy the domain name and nothing else they offer you literally need none of it. There's a trade off between CMS like drupal and wordpress , and a Dreamweaver made site and a CMS (Content Managment System like drupal/joomla/word press). Both take an investment to learn. CMS offers ease of use in the future, but your own site offers more control, and a ability to make a truly unique site. In my opinion CMS sites are looking a bit the same these days.

If you are just building a small, basically static site, take a serious look at Barebones CMS if you want to use a CMS that is closer to what you already know how to do in PHP and Dreamweaver. A CMS is a way to allow other people besides yourself to more easily make changes to the content of a webpage. A CMS opens up a can of worms to more severe problems such as security vulnerabilities and hacking attempts against weak passwords. If you are under a time-crunch, it might just make more sense to do what you already know how to do in Dreamweaver and hand-coded PHP. Learning any CMS product takes time. As to domain names and hosting: Never, ever combine them, but you seem to be on the right track there. It is tempting to buy hosting and domain with the same company, but that exposes you to a LOT of risk. Also, I personally recommend NameCheap because you want WHOIS protection with whoever you go with. GoDaddy WHOIS protection is about $12/year whereas NameCheap is about $3/year and NameCheap's WhoisGuard solution is MUCH more flexible and better integrated with their tools. Both are a ripoff though since you are paying for something that is required in this day and age but the system is entirely automated.

I have a few WordPress sites up and running and found it very easy because all the basic framework is in place right from the start. It is very easily customized using the thousands of plug-ins that are available. You just need to search for and install (one-click) the ones that suit your needs. You can do some reading on most all of your questions, including how to choose a web host, on my blog at: http://blog.imagineprosperitynow.com/

Just use wordpress , it's better and you will save a lot of time .

This is completely down to you, of course, but there's no doubt using an "off-the-shelf solution" will save a looooooot of time. However, if you're like me and can't stand not understanding how something works you'd do it the long way (read: the real way). You mention a slight hesitation to make your work live, but this sounds like an ideal place to get started - static webpages and a few forms. Great! You don't have to worry about session security, databases, etcetc. My first live product was a payment integration service. A bit of a "thrown in at the deep-end situation."

well, since you already have the knowledge in using Dreamweaver, then go for it. Every websites starts with a scratch, just do it until you got the best page layout. Do not get stuck up with a static website, make it dynamic but not too much, have balance in your work. Since it's a pharmaceutical company, try visiting their competitors websites so that you can at least an idea in creating one or even a better one. For buying a domain name, go for a research first by searching the best domain name provider, etc for the best investment that you can have
