What camera/camcorder should I buy for youtube videos?
-
My boyfriend is graduating in a few months and I've been thinking about buying him a camera to do youtube videos with. He's very talented but can't really afford a camera for himself right now. The video should be decent enough but it's the sound quality that's most important. I'm looking for a camera that can pick up voice, piano, and guitar really well above anything else. Budget is around $200 but I'd be willing to splurge a little if I got a camcorder/external microphone or if I thought I found a great deal. Also, I really just have no idea about any of this stuff. So, if I were to buy a camcorder/mic, would I need to purchase additional software to sync video and sound? It wouldn't need to be anything spectacular, the videos would be a casual setting. Also, he might have other people perform with him at times so it's important that you don't have to have your face right in the camera to hear things clearly. btw, I'm only working part time for now so anything over $300 is out of the question. Please help! Thanks : ]

Most cameras these days have video capability. But as CMOS becomes more prevalent in low cost cameras, there are some very harsh artifacts to contend with. Rolling Shutter becomes a problem with some of these cameras, so find one that uses a CCD sensor. For instance, the Go Pro Hero series cameras all have CMOS sensors and are prone to rolling shutter distortion that some people find problematic.

Check on the Kodak Zi8. I have that one and it does beautifully. You can change between 1080p, 720p 60FPS, 720p 30FPS, and SD videos. It even has 5.1MP stills, but I don't use that. The best thing about it is the external mic jack, which allows you to use a better microphone, which Flip cameras do not have. As well as an SD card slot, which allows countless hours of recording.

I was looking for a P&S with 1080p video capability so I wouldn't have to get a separate camcorder. Let me say that the Canon 300 HS is a quality camera packed into a sleek body that I can easily slip into any pocket on the run. Indoor night shots of WITHOUT flash (incandescent lighting only) come out amazingly crisp with minimal noise. Autofocus is quite impressive as it tracks faces in the frame further enhancing ease of use. Menu functions are quite intuitive (if you've owned previous Canon models). It's got plenty of preset shooting modes. And it's quick between shots for a P&S (a couple seconds with flash photography).

This is a camera I want to get. Sound quality is AMAZING, YouTube videos prove it. It has great video quality, 1080p, highest form of HD for digital cameras. The picture quality amazing, 16.2mp The only thing that makes it so cheap is how it only has 4x zoom, which isn't much. The camera also looks quite attractive. It comes in gold, black, silver, and red. On Amazon, with shipping, it comes to about $250 something, well worth the money. Plus the whole back of the camera is a high quality touch screen. You can always look online to also see if nearby stores carry it cheaper than Amazon, I myself say it's more overpriced in stores. I think Amazon has the better deal. It's called the Sony Cyber shot DSC-TX100V, I have the name memorized ha ha. They have an updated, higher quality version of this camera now (dsc-tx200v), but it's new and still at the $500 mark.
