Has anybody ever been on the Norwegian Jewel?

Anybody ever heard of the Emerald jewel/cockroach wasp and what it does?

  • I understand that it acts as a parasite and it lives using a cockroach, controlling it's actions and paralysing it for its offspring to reproduce from. I was wondering whether someone could give me a detailed description on how it operates and how it has evolved to be such a successful parasite (as the cockroach is about 3/4 times its size) and it controls it's brain somehow.

  • Answer:

The wasp lays eggs inside of the cockroach. If it is paralyzed there are no actions to program. The larvae simple eat of it from the inside out in a manner which allows the cockroach to live for the longest possible time, thus ensuring the survival of the wasp larvae.Co-evolution in when several species evolve together, in conjunction with each other in a fashion that optimizes reproduction for both of them. The cockroach is kept from overpopulating itself out of existence by the wasp which also proliferates.
