Where can I go for a great, cheap, weekend getaway?

Where to go on a weekend getaway?

  • Looking for a weekend getaway with the boyfriend. We live around Reading which is close to Philadelphia, PA. We are looking to do a weekend getaway some where. Does anyone have any recommendations? Nothing too crazy in price. Also, attractions and cool things to see in the location recommended if you could. Willing to travel. Thanks!

Try Maryland's Eastern Shore. Surrounded by history, the Miles and Tred Avon Rivers and the beautiful waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the town of St. Michaels is a pure joy. Pick a B&B within the town limits. Spend the day walking around this charming fishing village, known as the Town that Fooled the British. Check out the Maritime Museum, Christ Church (founded in 1672) and the historic waterfront. Dining is amazing, the shops are delightful and don't skip with locally crafted beer tastings at the Saint Michaels Brewery, or locally bottled wine tastings at Saint Michael's Winery. You can view the last remaining Skipjacks being restored at the Marina, and then drive over to the Bellevue-Oxford Ferry and take the 10-minute ferry ride across the river to Oxford. Stop at the Highland Creamery for the best ice cream you ever tasted, made by a Son of the Scots Highlands. Then, if you have another hour or two before sunset, head down Rt. 33 to Tilghman Island. Take a sail on the Rebecca Ruark or the Lady Patty and tour the harbors and watch the restoration of Poplar Island. By the time the sun is setting, you really must view it from Lowe's Wharf. Order a couple of grapefruit crushes, listen to the music and watch the sun set over the river from one of the adirondack chairs in the sand. Jump into a game of volleyball, try your luck at "cornhole" or ring toss or use one of the floats to cool off in the sandy river waters. By the time you return home, you'll swear you've been gone longer than just the weekend. Best spots for food are Carpenter Street, a casual saloon, Ava's, an upscale hand crafted pizza place, St. Michaels Steak and Crab House, right on the harbor and Chesapeake Landing for its stuffed oysters. In fact, it's hard to get a bad meal in this town. Fresh seafood is the specialty. One word of warning...this is likely to become your favorite weekend destination!
