Do many people smoke cigarettes?

Why do so many poor people smoke cigarettes?

  • I know not ALL of them do but as a generalization (bad, I know) I see more lower-class people smoking cigarettes than people who have more money... which doesn't make sense because you would think they couldn't afford it?

    People that are weak minded abuse cigarettes, drugs and booze. Rather than living a life in service to others they choose to be the recipients of other peoples generosity this being enabled. As I got gasoline today the cashier and the guy in front of me were talking about their bar times the night before. It was as if their job was to be a barfly 40 plus hours a week. Big deal, a part time minimum wage job, 2 small kids at home that need her but she is too indifferent to care about them, a boat load of welfare programs, and a smoke and drink for hours every night.

It's hard to say whether they're self-medicating because they're depressed about being poor or if their poverty is the result of some underlying depressive problem. But the bottom line is that nicotine is an anti-depressant and when you have little to live for why not just do what feels good?

Prolonged serious poverty just has that effect on people, it makes them resign. BTW poverty is not (just) a consequence of their personal problem, its a consequence of other people being rich. The world has 7 billion humans, producing food for 12 billion - still a billion goes hungry. Capitalism doesn't make sense either
