What's the education requirements for a nurse practitioner?

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Education?

  • I am only in high school but am looking into becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I was looking in to education after high school and wondering if I would go to a 4 year college and major in Biology and then go the nursing school and get a masters or would I just major in nursing while in college and then go on from there? Thank you!

  • Answer:

Gracie, In order to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, you need to enroll first in a four year BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program. Then when you complete that program, you will sit for NCLEX and get an RN license in your state. At that point, many nurses begin to work while looking for a Masters in Science Nursing program in which Pediatrics or Neonatal care is the focus. One you get in and complete a Masters in Science in Nursing in a Nurse Practitioner program, then you sit for the exam to receive advanced licensure in your state. Then, you can begin the task of looking for a job as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. In the next few years a Ph D or DSN, doctorate in science in nursing will be entry for practice. Very best wishes.
