Whats the difference between the army national guard and army reserve?
-
I was told all branches of the military go overseas including national guard but is the army reserve like the national guard where they protect our borders caus I was thinking about joining the national guard but I'm not sure if I wanna join any branch of the military

Answer:
The army reserves are federally controlled and are exactly as the name says, a reserve component or back-up to the regulary army. The army national guard is state controlled, unless activated by the federal government, and they usually do things during state emergencies or periods of civil unrest. The national guard is also a reserve component of the army. Everyone will get deployed overseas at any case. Don't join unless you are really considering making a career out of it, in my opinion. Also, check out the Air Force or Air National Guard. If I could do it over, I would have probably went to the Air Force instead. Of course I wanted to be Mr. Tough Guy and join the Army.

All reserve services (armed, navy, air force, marine, coast guard) are exactly that...reserves...the belong to that branch and are called up to active duty when needed. The national guard (army, air force) are quite similar, with a few caveats. First, while they are army and air force in training, they actually fall under the control of the governor of the state where the reside...ie. California Army National Guard. They will be used at the discretion of the governor for things like natural disasters or civil unrest. The, like the reserves, also can be called to active duty at the request of the president. Both guard and reserve forces have been used in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are both "military"
