How do I get back money my ex roommate/ ex boyfriend owes me?
-
I was living with 2 roommates in an apartment, one who I began to have a relationship with. He turned out to be aggressive and controlling, and I finally had enough so I moved out with hardly any notice due to threats and I just did not feel welcome in my own house. I didn't sign a lease, and 30 days is a courtesy, which he did not deserve. So we came to a conclusion where he was fine with me moving out but he was in a pinch for rent so I lent him $300 for rent and got him to write out and sign that he would pay me back on the 15th (when he got paid). I also am storing some of my stuff there, which we agreed I would pay him for. I stayed there one weekend because I thought things were fine and we were back to sort of seeing each other, then at the end of the weekend he threatened not to give my money back because I was "living there like I hadn't even moved out". But....I don't have a room anymore and I'm not living there anymore. So we had a big fight and he agreed to give me my money. But then on the 15th I messaged him asking if it was ok to stop by and get the money he owes me, and he went off about how it's not my money since I didn't give him 30 days and that to "go ahead" and take it to the police and that he had taken legal council. I have no idea what to do, I am moving my things out asap and I just want my money back and to never see him again.... is it worth it to take him to court or will I end up having to pay more than it's worth?

Answer:
Court is a hassle, and $300 isn't worth it. Write it off. On the plus side, you never have to see him again. That's actually the EXACT sum my ex still owes me, but I will never see again. MOOCHERS!

It's a civil suit, call Joe brown, ha.. or whatever. Nah, you don't owe him though cause there wasn't any agreement you'll pay the night you stayed..he signed an agreement to owing you money for whatever... he owes it to you.

Small claims court? You don't have to hire a lawyer for that.
You are living there. Legally, if you have a toothbrush in the apartment you are living there and must pay rent even if you never enter the apartment. Take it to court and it's very likely you will be paying him money.
