What's the problem with asylum seekers?

Should Australia Abolish Mandatory Detention For Asylum Seekers?

  • i am currently doing an English essay and i believe Australia should abolish mandatory detention for asylum seekers. I have no clue where to start. whats a good and powerful introduction?

  • Answer:

What you have to understand, is that even though my Government is being cruel and inhumane, it is really trying to protect my country. All the asylum seekers so far have been normal people, but the Government keeps them in detention so that they can make SURE that they are not terrorists (seeing as the threat jumped a million miles after September 11). The sad thing is though, that they don't care about the refugees, they just care about boarder security. I agree with you though, it should be abolished, or, if it must be kept, make the detention time much shorter, and make the Camps more liveable. Here is an idea for your introduction: The mandatory detention of asylum seekers in Australia, until they are deemed refugees and released, not only hurts the people in detention, but it also hurts the reputation that the Australian Federal Government so desperately tries to uphold. This in fact, is true. The Government likes to tell the world that Australia is a GREAT country, and blah, blah, but really, it's not. Even though the Government is technically a constitutional monarchy, it is seeming more and more like a cruel dictatorship. Everything we do is controlled. The Government imposes strict taxes on us, such as the carbon tax, the miners tax, and the fair work Australia Act, which are all aimed at helping the unions, and creating jobs for migrants (not refugees because they don't care about them), and kicking Australians out of work. The mandatory detention of refugees only highlights how bad things are getting here politically, how far the Government will go to make Australia look nothing like what it really is. But then again, they SAY that they're trying to protect us... Hope I helped, and good luck on your assignment. P.S. if my answer is deleted, you know who's behind it.

There are problems with abandoning mandatory detention. In an ideal world only genuine political refugees would be filtered into Australia. We are not in an ideal world. The vast majority of "refugees" are men and they come from muslim countries. They pass through other muslim countries to get to Australia. While we have Australian soldiers fighting the taliban islamists and dieing, trying to build a better country for Afghans....we have young, healthy military age Afghan men arriving here, and if they don't get what they want, when they want it, they sew their lips together, or climb on the roofs of the centres in protest. They have rioted many times and set fire to the detention centre costing the Australian taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. The truth is that the vast majority of the men arriving on the boats are not political refugees...they are economic opportunist's. There is a huge pool of hundreds of millions of people, that would if they could, arrive on Australia's shores....what do we do..take them all? The idea of the detention centres is to slow down the onslaught. John howard had the solution. The easier we make it for these economic "refugees" the more we are going to get! If you want to end up like the US, which has ten million illegal immigrants out in the general population with the situation out of control....then let them come and send them into the community on arrival!
