What is muriatic acid?

Does muriatic acid lose effectiveness over time?

  • I've drained the pool and am considering an acid wash. I've been experimenting with some muriatic acid that has been in my shed for at least 10 years and it doesn't seem very effective in cutting the build up and stains on my plaster. Would a new jug of acid make any difference or do I have other issues to deal with?

  • Answer:

Muriatic acid is technical grade HCl (hydrochloric acid). The acid strength is determined by the solubility of HCl gas in water. As long as the bottle has been tightly capped, little HCl vapor would have exited and the acid strength is not likely to have been markedly altered - so the acid strength should be about the same as when new. I caution you - learn how to safely handle the product. You must use protective gear or disaster is likely.
