How do I become a G.P?

How do I become a GP Doctor?

  • Hi I'm 25 years old in shropshire I'm thinking about becoming a Gp but I don't have any qqualificationsat all I've been raising my two children. Does anyone know how I can do this I'm on bbenefitso have no money so would need funding or be able to get a student loan. Does anyone know in shropshire how and were and what courses or training need to become a GP thanks sarah

  • Answer:

First you need good "A" levels to be accepted into medical school. Once accepted, you can apply for a student loan. You spend time at college and time working in a teaching hospital gradually acquiring qualifications until, about 7 years later you are able to apply for a GP post. That doesn't necessarily mean you'll get one.

Congrats on your (ambitious) decision, Sarah! Medicine is a very competitive market - I need to make that fundamentally clear. A GP will require either an M.D. or a D.O. (research degrees), which are conducted at Med. school. For entry requirements, contact a variety of Med. schools - they'll differ... Birmingham, for example, requires 8 GCSEs at A grade. BSMS (Brighton Sussex Med. School), however, sets a min. requirement of 3 (A grade) A levels (two of which MUST be Biology and Chemistry) - the third can be of your choice, although please note that neither Critical Thinking nor General Studies count. You'll also need (at least) 4 AS levels.
