What does salmonella do to you if you get it?

What are the chances that I will get salmonella?

  • In our classroom at school, we have ducklings and chicks. I was handling them and didnt realize there was a chance that I could get salmonella until my friend told me. I'm a germ freak, so Im freaking out. As soon as I got home, I took a shower. We were on spring break last week. But tomorrow we go back to school. If the baby birds i was handling did carry salmonella, then I know that my desk and supplies (binder, folder, papers, etc.) are All contaminated. I'm in middle school, so what are the chances that I will get it, and what can I do to kill the salmonella that is on all my stuff. Also, how long would it take for it to die on its own.

  • Answer:

wear a Hazmat suit to school for the next month just to be safe. If you do get salmonella sue the school for all its worth. I'm serious, they aren't supposed to expose children to salmonella.

Dont freak. The incubation period for Salmonella is about 3-5 days. If you didnt get sick during spring break - you should be fine. Yes there's a chance that chicks and ducklings can carry Salmonella. Salmonella isnt airborne and you wont get sick just by being near the birds. You want to watch out for the bird droppings. After handling the birds or cleaning their cages, you want to wash your hands with plenty of warm soapy water.
