Where can I find a Medical Assistant job in Cleveland?

Dental Assistant, Can't Find A Job?

  • A couple months ago, I completed 2 yrs in a dental assisting program have my associates degree as well. I have plans to attend Dental School so I'm in the process of completing my bachelors so that I can apply. I would love to work while getting my bachelors and get some use out of my dental assisting certification even if it's just part-time work but I'm having a difficult time finding a job. Even my instructors have been shocked that I haven't found work yet. Everyone says I have great personality, people person, very motivated and work very well. I never really thought this until someone mentioned it but I was told that a lot of dentists aren't to fond of having a male assistant. So with that in mind, it hasn't discouraged me but I'm thinking maybe I should just hold out until i get my Dental Degree. Not working isn't something I really want to do because I love to work. Any suggestions on how to find work as a male assistant.

Yeah it is uncommon to see male assistants. I would suggest letting offices know, via your resume, that you are trying to work your way to dental school, because some dentists may have sympathy for you and consider hiring you because of that. Also many dentists now are WOMEN so there is a good chance if you keep looking for work you might find some. I would try sending resumes out to job openings listing on the resume where you are going to school and that your major is PRE DENTAL (that's what you want to become, a dentist, so put predental down as your current major) and then put down the college you attended for dental assisting. Make your resume like this: Name Address (if you live more than 20 mins away from the job offices rarely will consider you) number Certifications list CPR, if you don't have it take it now from American heart Assoc. and put it on there Dental assisting (put down state) radiology/xray (some offices seem to not realize dental hygienist even have this!) Education Where you are in college now major pre dental expected graduation date Where you took dental assisting don't list HS! Then put down work experience list everywhere you worked, even while training and not being paid. Then list off your skills computer skills? digital xray experience? have you made a lot of mouth guards or retainers in practices yet? Also sign up at a DENTAL temp agency. They seem to exist in every state. Try to get temp work as a DA in your area through the agency. Helps you meet dentists and other dental professionals and if they like you they may hire you, if there is an opening at the office. If you still don't get any calls from your resume when you apply then take off the pre dental college mention and see if they will call you. Also I suggest abbreviating your name if the dentist is MALE. Example: say your name is Thomas Alex Smith. Put down T.A. Smith OR T. Alex Smith (alex can be a girl's name too so if you have a middle name or first name that can be used for a girl you might have an advantage to get a call at least).

Keep on trying. You will get one. Keep the faith. Show them how much you want the job and how an asset you would be.

Some dentists are old school - can't change people, just be yourself. Personally, I've had some great male assistants. I've been pretty impressed, and they change the atmosphere with the staff. Most patients are female, and do fine with a male assistant. I also like someone who is willing to fix things around the office. I used to think they were less drama, and have since been proven wrong. ;) Have you thought about a dental lab? Or volunteering? These would look good on your application.
