How to become fluent (almost fluent) in French?

How long does it take to become fluent in French?

  • Since I am going to relocate to Geneva, Switzerland I think it will be better if I start learning French as soon as possible. Some people say French grammar is very difficult :(. Is that true? I am 25 years old. Isn't that too late for me to start learning a foreign language? I think there are two things that can help me while studying it. I am good at learning foreign languages and I was a hard working student at the university. So I will do my best again to study well. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Answer:

How long is a piece of string? To a large extent you answer your own question. The only advice is not to hang around too much with the expat or English language community. I started Russian with 26 at uni, went to live a year in Russia and only had contact with English speaking students at uni. I am now going to China to learn Chinese and will see foreign language students only at school and apart from that see how I will survive.

French grammar is difficult for speakers of languages like English or German, because its different. But you said you are good at learning foreign languages. If you already know a language with Latin roots like Spanish, Italian or Portugese, it will make learning French much easier! And you can never start early enough. The fact that you are hard working might be useful when studying vocabulary. But after you get some basic vocabulary its more important to get fluent with what you have if you wanna live in a French-speaking town. So try to speak French as much as you can. Read French books oder websites, watch French tv and so on...
