So stressed out about college... Should I just go to a different one? Or try upping my ACT score?
-
Ok, I graduated high school last year. My dad works at a University, so I get to go there for free. Problem is, my ACT score isn't high enough. I got a 20 the second time I took it, and I took it again today. I try studying, but after literally 10 minutes my brain just gives up and says "I'll do it tomorrow". I kept putting it off till 2 days before the ACT and only looked at the practice tests for like 20 minutes. I've never been able to study because I can never concentrate. I'm good with paying attention when the teacher is explaining things but when it comes to individual work, I'm only good at homework, but I can never properly study without losing focus. I'm extremely good at math, but I feel like I didn't do good on the math portion because there were so many terms I've completely forgotten the meaning of. I have a high enough ACT score to go to a different University, but at the moment I don't have a job, so I have no way of paying for it. I could apply for a loan but my mom keeps telling me that's what my brother did and he's in huge debt right now (my mom exaggerates so I'm not even sure if this is entirely true). My parents keep pushing me to go to the college I can go to for free but I honestly don't know if I want to. It's an extremely prestigious school, so I assume the classes are a bit more challenging than normal, which I don't think I could handle. And there's not even any classes related to what I want to actually do as a career.

First off here is an idea which is similar to what i am doing. If you feel like your wasting time and money retaking the ACT go to the college your dad works at for free for the first year and then transfer to the university of your choice. Most university dont require you give them any test scores if you have more than 32 credits or have spent a year or more at a different college. this is what i am doing i had average SAT scores and went to Ramapo College of NJ but now i have a 3.6 GPA and am in an honor society and am now planning to transfer to either Fordham LC or NYU. i think debt is a boogey man. after all many people will tell you debt is "CRUSHING!" but realistically debt is normal especially when you get a credit card or buy a house or car. it is not always that simple, and for me it was either go to college and get into debt or dont go to college. So if i am going into debt it might as well be at the college of my choice. But you may feel differently (and i dont think you do). IF you do take out loans make sure they are either through the federal or state govt try avoiding private loans. You can always get a job on campus or through a work-study grant. GOOD LUCK
