What are the best fashion schools/programs in San Francisco?

  • I'm at the end of my sophomore year in college and have decided that I want to transfer to a fashion school. Which schools are better for fashion design and which are better for fashion merchandising/marketing? How do FIDM and Academy of Art University compare when it comes to their fashion programs?

    Academy of Art University advertises a lot but it is not very good, so forget that one. You can look up top rated schools with fashion design and see which is better. It is always better to get a degree from a 4-year academic university. Do you want schools only in the city of San Francisco or are other parts of the bay area okay too? I dont know if these have fashion programs but California College of the Arts and San Francisco Art Institute have been around a long time and well respected.

Academy of Art University is a great school to go to for Fashion. And it is fully accredited! I’m studying Fashion Merchandising there now and am learning a lot! Since all of the instructors there are industry experts, I’ve been able to get a lot of valuable information, while preparing for success. In fact, I recently landed a great internship with Marc Jacobs, which has potential to become a full-time job once I graduate. Academy of Art is a great school but with any school, it’s important to do your research. What’s great about FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is we have a wide network of not only successful graduates, but people in the fashion industry as well. This is important for networking purposes. We have a great Career Center and each FIDM Student is assigned a career counselor who uses our database of contacts to assist in finding the best internships. If you’re interested in fashion marketing, we have a great Merchandise Marketing Program that challenges FIDM Students and fully prepares them to start working in the fashion industry once they graduate by knowing how to predict fashion trends, create a buying plan using the latest technology, and how to create a marketing plan. I would say that the Academy of Arts is a better school. I have met people who have gone to FIDM and they ended up working retail after graduation.
