How to Become an Emergency Room Nurse?
-
I have finally decided to pursue a career in emergency care but, I need help deciding where to go. I am an EMT-B and I want to be an emergency room nurse. The problem I am having is how to do that. My plan is to go to a university (not online) on the east coast in states like NJ, PA, or NY and go for a bachelors degree in nursing. The question is what are the steps I should be taking as a high school student and if there are any good universities I should apply for that can get me to work in emergency care?

Answer:
The best thing you can do is already part of your plan - get a Nursing degree. Once you graduate, you'd look to get a job in a hospital - the hospitals in my area generally put new Nurses into a pool (they work where they're needed at first), and then they eventually work consistently in one department. When deciding which school to attend, look at the hospital system they're in relationship with. Some of the most valuable parts of Nursing education happen during Clinical Hours in the hospital.

This is the route that I am taking to eventually get into the ER or on a MICU. I am attending a community college right now to get my RN. I am also in paramedic school because I was supposed to have a year off between my clinicals and GECs. I was bumped up in the list repeatedly so they overlapped. I worked as an EMT full-time for 1 semester while doing paramedic and nursing school. I have over a year's worth of experience on a fire department as a firefighter/EMT. I recently started as an ER patient care tech, another fancy name as a nursing assistant. The nursing students and CNAs were eliminated from the hiring process leaving the LPNs, EMTs, medical assistants, and paramedics. Out of 60 she viewed as qualified, she cut it down to 11. Out of the 11, she sent 5 for the 2nd round of interviews and she hired 4 people. My boss was impressed with the certs, the fact that I am doing both paramedic and nursing, and how I could relate almost every question back to my EMS experience. Want an example of stress? Car accidents, codes, fire, etc. I had a huge list of certs that I've completed, ITLS, ACLS, PALS, PEPP (one group prefers PEPP), BLS instructor and currently affiliated with a training center. I also plan on getting my GEMS. A lot of nurses who work in the ER in my area are previous or current paramedics. A lot of them also currently volunteer or work at a fire department. Usually the hospitals prefer you to have either previous road, ER, flight, or ICU experience. I strongly recommend finding some way to get into the ER department soon after you graduate high school. I would look at the hospitals around where you plan on going to school once you decide and see what basic requirements they require. Right now I would also start working in some sort of customer service job to build "customer service skills." Unit clerks usually require med terminology, nursing assistants usually require a CNA, patient care techs can be usually other personnel like EMTs, medics, LPNs, etc.
