Answer:
Hi, I work with students applying to the University of British Columbia, and I'm happy to answer your question. At UBC, and I believe all public post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, tuition rates are based on your citizenship. If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you'll pay the same tuition, whether you are coming from Alberta or BC. I can't guarantee that the rules will be the same at private institutions, so if you are considering one of them, it would be best to check in directly. If you have any further questions about UBC, feel free to check out our admissions website, https://you.ubc.ca/ubc/, or stop by our Facebook page, where we have advisors answering questions daily: www.facebook.com/youbc. No. Universities have two prices -- one for Canadians and permanent residents and one for foreign students (if the program is open to foreign students). They aren't going to get into the game of trying to get people to 'prove' they are residents of the specific area. Most children go whether their parents move... so living in a province isn't typically a choice for young people. Some universities will give seating priority for residents of that city/location. For example, a Northern BC University will probably give priority to those living in the area -- since it was built so that they wouldn't have to move south.
