Physician assistant questions.

Questions about Physician Assistant...!?

  • So, I really wanted to be in the medical field but the problem is I have a weak stomach when it comes to vomit, bowel movements, and all the "icky" things. I want to become a Physician Assistant and want to know (from your experience or people you may know) if it's a nasty job? Will I be exposed to alot with this job? I've done my research but I thought it'll be better getting a response with someone with the experience. Thanks

  • Answer:

I am sure it would depend on what you finally do for employment, but there are very few medical positions where you do not get exposed to "icky" things, and you don't have the ability to not do things in school. So it will depend on how much you really want to avoid this-you might not want to be a PA. I have done huge fecal disimpactions, abscesses, bloody infected wounds, handled miscarriages, diarrhea, vomiting, pus, maggots, trauma wounds, uterine decayed prolapses, amputations, you name it.

Well, unless you are a specialty PA (ie ortho), most PAs take on Family Practice and Medicine. That means you will see diarrhea, constipation, vomit, hemorrhoids, oozing genitals, and "growths" in all sorts of great places. Luckily, most of the dirty work can be delegated to LPNs and LVNs.
