How to become an ultrasound technician?

How do I become an Ultrasound Technician?

  • I would like to start a career in Ultrasound technician. How do I start this. I have graduated high school and have been a stay-at-home mommy ever since. But I am ready to do something else besides be a mommy. I know I have to go to college or some sort of vo-tech. I just don't know how to get started. I tried to apply online to get more info about some classes for radiology and sonography, but it told me I had to be certified in radiology technician first before I can look into sonography. How do I do that? I also read that I can just get certified through vocational school instead of years of college. How do I go about this? This is what I want to do, I am just lost as to how to start the process, it's been a while since I've been in school or anything. What do I do? Any answers appreciated, please no rude comments!

  • Answer:

There are multiple routes into Sonography but the most common is a 2 year associate's degree program. Not all programs require a background in RT first. You'll just have to see what's offered around your area. Certificate programs are only open to people with a background in health care. Look here for accredited programs: http://www.caahep.org/Find-An-Accredited-Program/ more info: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Healthcare/Diagnostic-medical-sonographers.htm
