What audition song would be good for?

What's a good audition song to sing for an audition into a semi-professional theatre company?

• Hi, I've just discovered that BAOS (Bristol Amateur Operatic Society), are holding auditions for their new season. They're a very established company where I live and they have an adults and a juniors group. I will be auditioning for the junior club and I am 16 years old. I have no idea what I am in terms such as Soprano, alto, mezzo, etc, but I am better at singing low songs and songs such as "On my own" from Les Miserables. In June, the junior and senior company is coming together to do a production of Les Miserables, but the auditions I am going for is to get a membership into the company. I realise it's not normal chose a song from the musical you're auditioning for, so any song suggestions would be great! So far I'm thinking of singing the song Back to Before from Ragtime. Does anyone have any more suggestions? You're help is very much appreciated! Thanks, - Katie :)

  Hi Katie, I am a Theatre/Film teacher. If you have a fairly low singing voice then in technical terms you are an alto/belter/ Singing a song from the musical you are auditioning for has mixed opinions on whether it is wise or not. Some directors find it presumptuous to assume you would be cast in a particular role; however, some directors view it as being self-aware in knowing your 'type.' That being said it is always good practice to sing songs that showcase your acting skills. Find a song that you love to sing and sounds good. Here are a few examples of alto/belter songs: Tell me it's not true- Blood Brothers You don't know this man- Parade Maybe this time- Cabaret Anything Barbara Striesand sang. Hope that helps
