Why do eyes cloud black after death?

Can peoples eyes really cloud over or darken depending on emotion?

  • In books when somebody is daydreaming their eyes either 'cloud over' or 'glaze over' Does this just mean they go out of focus, or do they actually get cloudy looking? Also, when someone is lustful their eyes darken. Are these just things they say in books (because they say them A LOT) or is their truth to it?

  • Answer:

You know that look when someone goes into a trance, or they are extremely tired? They seem distant and unfocused. That is what is being described when someone says eyes are "clouded" or "glazed" over. There is truth to it in that you can tell when people are tired, but no, eyes do not really become cloudy or glazed. That would be weird, to be honest. They are somewaht like metaphors. Glaze, when you cover something smooth with it, makes it rippled or covered in something that is not completely clear. And "cloudy" is the opposite of "clear", so when someone's eyes are not clear, they are "cloudy".

I'm pretty sure when they say "cloud over", they mean that the eyes go distant and don't really seem to be focusing on anything. Same goes for "glaze over". As for the darkening, this is true. When you are feeling lustful or "excited" even, your pupils enlarge, giving your eyes a darker look.

I have seen a person's eyes darken with anger. I think the 'clouding over' comment is referring more to someone gazing into the air....not focusing on anything, lost in their thoughts.
