Was Feudalism a good system for the Middle Ages?

Was feudalism a good political system for the Middle Ages? Why or why not?

  • some have claimed that feudalism was the perfect political system for the Middle Ages, what does this mean?

  • Answer:

Sorry but there was no such thing as "Feudalism" and if this is a school question, you're working off an obsolete textbook. Medieval historians have not used the term seriously in something like 20 years. I went through the papers given at the annual medieval studies congress at Kalamazoo, Michigan - America's largest conference on the Middle Ages, which runs 500 or 600 papers given per year - and in the last five years, only ONE paper was on "feudalism." It's an obsolete concept and does not describe any realities in medieval society. The relevant literature that caused it to be abandoned are Elizabeth AR Brown's paper "The Tyranny of a Construct: Feudalism," and Susan Reynolds' book "Fiefs and Vassals."
