What was the Beer Hall or Munich Putsch?

How long after Mussolini's march on Rome did Hitler have his "Beer Hall Putsch" in Munich?

  • Answer:

Mussolini's march on Rome began on October 24, 1922. The Beer Hall putsch was over a year later - November 8, 1923. They were similar in that both had the objective of taking control of the government. The results - in Italy Mussolini was successful, while Hitler's was a failure and led to his being jailed for two years although he was hardly kept in a traditional prison cell. The inspiration was similar, both Mussolini and Hitler were right-wingers who opposed socilaism and both parties had a lot of tacit support for their views. Both were no lovers or respectors of democracy and both considered themselves the products of manifest destiny - that is they were born to lead. In Italy the King considered that there would be civil war if he did not accede to Mussolini's request to form a government and considered him the best person in government to fight the breakdown in authority. Similarly the elites in italy and Germany thought it would be easy to control Hitler and Mussolini when in power.
