What position in high school football should I play?
-
I am an 8th grader (14 years old) going into high school. I am 5'5" and could potentially reach 5'10" at best. I am a very good football player and have always been able to play any position. I weigh 150lbs and am around 18% body fat. I am on a diet and plan on being around 8-13% body fat by the end of summer (August) but still weighing around 145lbs and hopefully 150lbs. My concern isnt the skill or athletism, I can work for that and am already a very solid and athletic football player. My concern is my height, at 5'5" its hard to find a good position. My goal is to recieve a full ride to the University of Stanford so I'll need to find just the right position to work for. I would play running back but that position is taken as well as safety because I play with the 2 fastest kids in the state and their dad is the head coach. I have a great arm and have always been a talented quarterback but with my height I dont see recieving a full ride to Stanford at a 5'10" QB, especially with QB's being 6' to 6'5". Line backer is another position I think would work great, but again I think being short may hurt the scholarship hopes at linebacker. Anyways I just want a position that would be good for a short player, I can even play defensive line, I'm actually pretty good at it. Bench Press: 190lbs Squat: 280lbs but had a recent torn hip muscle and torn hamstring so probably around 230lbs but will increase quickly. Hang clean: 160lbs Push-ups: 60 Pull-ups: 25 Vertical: 24 inches 40 yard dash: 4.83 seconds (before hip and hamstring injury, now its probably around 5seconds flat) Mile: 6 min. 22 sec. Also if you have any workout tips, nutritional tips or just a good workout I am always looking for ways to have an edge. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(:

Based on your height and weight, as well as your 40-yard dash and mile run times, I believe that the best fit for you is at running back. For your age, you have the ideal size for a high school freshman running back. My best advice for you this (and every) offseason is to eat healthy, exercise by doing weight lifting, and either jogging or going for a long run every day. If you do these things, you will get faster, stronger, and into better shape, which will greatly improve your chances of becoming a successful high school football player. By the way, your chances of playing college football depend on your performance in football during your high school career, especially during your senior year of high school. If you perform very well in football during your high school years, you will greatly improve your chances of getting recruited to play for a college football program.

Based on your stats, i'd say you'd do pretty well at cornerback. even though you're a little short and light, you should be able to use your strength and speed to get to the ball before the receiver. I played there and i'm 5'8" and 160 with a little more strength but a little less speed and was very successful. You just have to get your footwork and awareness to a very high level, which isn't too hard with a good bit of affseason training. (i used google and my coaches). For weight training: CrossFit, CrosssFit, CrossFit! Find a gym or just look up WODs online. This style of workout works on getting real life strong instead of weight room strong with unorthodox movements, high intensity, and conditioning. It is being widely used in the military now and in colleges all over the country. You will benefit from it. Good luck! hope I helped.
