How do deaf people using sign language learn new words?

  • How do deaf people using sign language learn new words? I mean, the hearing world can just read and say the words out loud, unlike the deaf world where they have to sign it. Let's say the mostly recognised country of Kosovo, how do deaf people know how to sign that country properly? We can just say the name of the country and that's it. However, deaf people may read the name of the country, but how do they know how to sign it? Will they just do it letter by letter if there's no sign of it yet? How do the ''leaders'' of the ASL or whatever sign language inform the deaf people that they have a new sign for the people to use for that specific word?

  • Answer:

As far as I know some words are spelled letter to letter and some words have sign.

the same way hearing people do... some rapper or kid makes up a new sign and teaches it to his friends until it catches on. "Sign" language is a language just like any other language... it changes and evolves and grows over time. After decades of use, a new word gets officially accepted. The people tell the "leaders" when they want a new word added by using it al the time.

Fingerspell it, you'd be surprised at how fast that do that. Most countries have signs, if not they will make one up and spread it around the community.
