Help finding mass and center of mass?

I need help with a PHYSICS 111 problem involving the center of mass of four spheres.?

  • Find the center of mass of this shape. Each m is a sphere in which the mass of m_1 = m_2 = m_3 , but the mass of m_4 is equal to twice that of m_1. L= length L is equal to the length between m_4 and m_1 and between m_3 and m_2 1.5L is the length between m_4 and m_3 and between m_1 and m_2 m_4----L-----m_1 I 1.5L I m_3----L------m_2 Please help.

  • Answer:

Sure. Study the definition of center of mass and hopefully you know how to add vectors. The problem is trivial.

Other answers

Start by placing m_3 at the origin of the xy-plane with m_3 and m_2 on the x-axis. Let (cmx, cmy) be the location of the center of mass. Then cmx = 2mL/5m = .4L and cmy = 4.5mL/5m = .9L If m_3 is placed at the origin, then the center of mass is located at (.4L, .9L).
