What is external and internal problems?

Who is the hero in Jurassic Park, and what are his internal and external problems?

  • I'm having trouble with this because I haven't seen the film in so long. I'm assuming the hero would be Alan Grant. What are his internal and external problems?

  • Answer:

I agree that it's probably Alan Grant (who's 46 to 54 years old at the time the movies were made), and one of his internal conflicts was that he was adverse to marriage, or so it appeared. He had never been married (as far as we can tell) and had never been a father or even an uncle (perhaps). He doesn't appear, at first, to relate well to children -- forgetting that he was once a child -- and thinks nothing of scaring the one boy in the group of visitors with his tale of a dinosaur's wrath. Grant tries his best to avoid riding in the same car with the inquisitive and talkative Tim, for example. But he softens when the two children need his care in order to survive the attack of the dinosaurs at the park. This same reluctance to commit to marriage and having children extends over into the next Jurassic Park movie (III in 2001) that features Alan Grant again. Ellie is now married to someone else and has a young child. Grant, again, is shown having difficulty relating to the child, over-estimating the three-year-old's level of maturity and comprehension.
