How does the american school grade system work?

  • Hey guys :D so im English and im in year 9. I have always wanted to know how the american school years worked but it was just never explained to me. So in England we have primary and secondary school but in america they have elementary, middle and high school. Can somebody please tell me 1. what age are you in when your in grade 1,2,3,4,5,6, etc 2. what grade i would be if i am in year 9 and i am 14 3. When do you start middle school and high school. if anybody else wants to add any more information, please do :) cheers guys :D

    1. I am 14 in eighth grade. 2. If you were in the US, you would be in eighth grade. I know that instead of kindergarten, you guys start at year one, so adding eight years to that means you're in year nine. Eight years after kindergarten (which Americans start at age 5) is eighth grade. 3. It really depends on how your local school does it. Generally, middle schools begins in sixth grade (age 11-12) and high school begins in ninth grade (age 14-15). I'm going to high school next year. :D

I'm 14 and I'm in 8th grade. Some of my cousins are 14 and in 9th grade. If you're one of the oldest in your class, you would be in 8th grade in middle school. If you're one of the youngest in your class, you'd be in 9th grade in high school. (:
