How do you write an essay? 10 points!?

How do you write an essay? And how long should it be? And what is thesis? Well so today at the end of the day while we were at homeroom our LA teacher came and told us to pick a third world country and write an essay about it. The problem is we haven't learn how to write an essay and she didn't even give us a rubri or something. Shes expecting us to hand it in when we get back to school after spring break! Help?!
Answer:

Write about the island of Borneo. It has some tribes that we have not even found yet. Or you can write about Australia. The title should be Australia: Land of the Past, Present and Future. The past being the Aboriginees. The present being the people immigrating within the past ten years. The future being what they are doing to improve the economy.
