What is a sonata in layman's terms?

Help with description of Beethoven Sonata No. 14 "moonlight"?

  • I need help describing the Beethoven sonata no. 14 "moonlight" all three movement. If you know anything about movement 1, 2, 3 or all please comment below. I need to describe the music in musical terms using musical terms such as: tone color, melody, pitch, rhythm, intensity, meter, dynamics, texture, its musical chord, mode. What i do know is that it was written in the classical period and I know some basic characteristics but not much else. I have listen to this piece over and over again and I really like it but when describing it correctly in musical terms I don't seem to be doing so well. So, again if you are a music professional, very knowledgeable, music major or anything of the sort please comment about one or all of the movements. The help is most appreciated. Thank you in advance

Someone asked a similar question about two years ago: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100423115952AA7ZUro The best book on the Beethoven piano sonatas is Companion to Beethoven's Piano Sonatas by Donald Tovey. The book contains a measure-by-measure analysis of the sonata form of the third movement.

Check your CD album's booklet for description. Some of those booklets have very good description/program notes of the music.
