How much does it cost to move a piano?

  • I have the chance to get a lovely upright piano for free. I would rather use a professional piano removal service but someone just quoted me £90. It's only travelling from Newcastle to Ashington (20miles approx) and ground floor at both ends. Does anyone know if £90 is a reasonable estimate? Also if I do use a professional would I still need to get it tuned when It's been moved and how much does tuning cost? I can get a normal mover for about £40, I know if I use them it would definitely need tuning afterwards anyway, But I could wait for that so I could spread the cost. Any advice appreciated thank you x

£90 is fair. A professional piano mover has the experience to get the job done with no damage to the instrument. You will still need to have the piano tuned at the distant end. Being lifted, strapped, and trucked across 20 miles will have an effect on the piano's tuning. Not to mention that the heating/humidity at the new location will be different and floor at either end will be a slightly different version of "level". After a week or two of settling in the new location, call out the tuner.
