How can I get an interview and eventually get the job?
-
I always seem to have trouble with even getting an interview for a job. I wanted to know if there was any tips that could help me with the application process for searching for a job. Below is my resume without my personal information and references. Please give me details on how I can improve my resume. Also, can you give any tips for the interview process? Thank you. Experience: 2010 - Present Direct Care Worker, Community Homes, Berkley, MI I take care of people with developmental disabilities. My daily duties consist of a plethora of tasks from helping consumers with daily living activities to passing medications, and completing daily mandatory paper work. Due to my flexibility I am able to take consumers to doctor’s appointments and outings as well. 2008 – 2009 Sales Associate, Macy’s, Harper Woods, MI As a Sales Associate at Macy’s I made sure to learn about all the products and services we provided to help adequately assist customers with their questions and purchases. I was continually awarded for selling promotional items, encouraging customers to apply for a Macy’s credit card, and going beyond by helping in other areas of the store, stocking, and help merchandising with product placement. 2007 – 2008 Provider Configuration, Molina Healthcare, Troy, MI I accessed provider eligibility through QNXT to insure payment. I compiled spreadsheets of provider ID numbers of whom we needed information such as licensing or insurance payment from. On a group project, I took the initiative to double my work load to finish the project of moving paper files to the computer storage and that move resulted in a project completion a month earlier than planned. Other duties I took on were scanning and faxing data to providers. I think tailoring your resume to each type of job does help you. Maybe even this resume is a bit too wordy( I have seen much worse) and could more to the point- I think people are just not going to take the time to read it. Also what type of jobs are you applying? You seem to be geared completely into health care so if you are applying for something in retail and they see you are in school for nursing- you look like a short term employee and not worth the investment! Finally after the crash and massive layoffs- many people retrained for the health care field. I just don't think there are the jobs out there and competition is more intense. You need to also follow up on every application/ interviews- do you send thank you notes and do call backs? I am so surprised how many of my friends got a job because they called the company and asked if they had reviewed their application etc. Good LUck to you!

Part of your problem may be how you translate your duties into actions in your cover letter (you do supply a cover letter, don't you?). The resume is the bare bones tasks and responsibilities that you have which will show the potential employer what areas you have experience in. The cover letter, which should be tailored for each job you are applying for, should explain how you used the skills you have to provide positive results for the company. A perfect one, for example, is the savings that you directly affected in the digitization project - your efforts saved one month worth of labor and the resulting payroll. At Macy's I assume you were rewarded for selling more promo items than other employees - how did this help the company? Did you suggest anything in any of your jobs that helped get jobs done faster or more inexpensively, etc. Companies want to know how hiring you will benefit them - so you need to sell yourself as an asset. After all, I am sure that most of the people on any of your jobs could do the same job, so what is it that you uniquely bring to the table. There are a number of examples of cover letters on the Internet, grab a couple to use as templates. Just remember to edit the letter to fit each job you are applying for.
