What can I do with a Business Economics major?

  • I've been contemplating what I can do after college for a while seeing as I am graduating in 2013. I thought I was going to try to become a CPA because I am taking the accounting minor at my school and by the time I graduate, I will have enough units to qualify me to sit for the CPA exam even with the new requirements. The bad thing is that as I got into the higher accounting classes, I started to really dislike accounting. I am currently taking an auditing course and it's my least favorite class. I hate the thought of even attending. Don't get me wrong, I do see the importance of accounting but I feel like it is something I just don't want to go into for the rest of my life. Seeing that I have a pretty good background in accounting and most of my economics classes have been business related (obviously), I have been trying to figure out what to do. The classes I enjoy most are classes that involve strategy. A lot of the game theory type classes are my favorites due to the thought process behind it. I've taken econometrics classes along with other statistical classes like Business forecasting which I've heard apply to the strategic world of business. So all in all, does anyone know of any jobs that I would enjoy in the business world? I have thought of positions such as a financial analyst and then maybe getting my CFA, but I feel like I'm narrowing down the field too much. Just like I did with accounting. I was also thinking that maybe I could get into public accounting and then transfer to some other financial type job due to the experience I would get from public accounting. But I feel like that would be a waste of time without getting becoming a CPA. If you guys could give suggestions about certain jobs I would enjoy, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

  • Answer:

Sounds like you could use all of those skills as a Business Consultant. You could start now with a website offering tips to new business start-ups. When you help your clients establish their chart of accounts, set a budget, do projections and outlooks based on market research, you will develop a relationship that will earn your hard work and savvy a long term client, and referrals. Work for yourself, the sky is the limit. That would be my suggestion if you enjoy flexibility and working your own schedule. Plan a strategy for your own success to reach the goals you seek for your own lifestyle. Build a solid business, then if you choose sell it and start another one. Good luck.
