How hard is it to get a good job in the music industry?

Is the music industry a good job?

• My girlfriend and i are going to college this fall, i know what i want to do, but she doesnt, she really loves music and wants to pursue a carrer in the music industry, she knows its not gonna be an easy job, and its half of the worlds dream, she mainly wants to be a producer, and just be able to mess with music and make beats, its her passion she's been doing it for years, no other job really intrests her, but will going to college for this get her anywhere? Woud a paramedic? cop? or computer tech benefit her more? Does anybody know or have a carrer in the music industry, if so? What has your career turned out to be?

  She could study communications, or some schools offer music production or entertainment industry management. Music education degree program could help a lot, too. I was in theater in college, but I went into another field. One thing about that, though in educational situations, the best performer does not always get the part they want. I know a young man who is in school studying computer information security (he's really smart) but he's also a really good musician but he knows that music won't pay the bills, so he will do that on the side. BTW - his school does not have a music program. it seems to me that the ones who make it big are singer/songwriters. But look at Katy Perry's bio - it took her a lot of tries to make it big - there's no guarantees - any big name would probably say they were also lucky in addition to having superior skills.
