Job opportunities for an 18 year old?

18 year old with a professional job and i hate it..should i quit?

  • I am a senior in high school and I am a part time dental assistant. I never applied for this job. The dentist I work for was my mom's past employee and he was looking for a new assistant, so when I was in for a cleaning he asked me. I agreed. I had NO idea what I was getting in for. I had NO training. AND I'm only a senior in high school. The job was going great at first, I was learning. I have been working there 2 days a week for the past 3 months. Lately though it has become TERRIBLE. The other assistant is around 45 years old and she hates me. She blames a lot of stuff on me that I did not do. She literally sits in the back room when i run around doing our jobs. She was the reason my mom quit her dental assisting job there. I only get paid minimum wage since I'm new and she gets paid $24. I'm busting my butt for minimum wage, I could be working at McDonalds doing nothing for that much. Not only that but they recently made me a secretary too so I'm being a dental assistant and secretary, still with minimum wage. I know i can ask for a raise but is it worth it? I'm not treated well by the staff because my mom left with problems with them. The dentist likes me though. The other day when they were updating their staff page on the website they wouldnt put me on because i look too young. They also want me to be open every day of the summer so if they need me they can call. I mean I dont want to be rude but I am going to be a freshman in college. I NEED MONEY. I cant just sit on my butt every day and wait for them to call, if they are going to call. Should i go get a steady job? I'm so confused. My best friend says quit. My mom likes me working there but idk. Can anyone give me their thoughts or advice? and btw my major in college has nothing to do with dental or assisting.

Yes, you could be working at MacD's. However what you are doing will look a LOT better on a resume. You will never get free of office politics, either. This is a good chance to learn how to deal with it. I'm not saying you should stay somewhere you are not happy, only that you could learn a lot about life and handling people in difficult situations and that will serve you well for the rest of your career. When I was your age, I worked on a golf course. Granted, knowing how to operate a greens mower is not something I use now, but knowing how to deal with people, schedule work, and handle situations with the public are things I still use today. Soon you will be going to college and you can quit then for an acceptable reason.

Hi! Honestly, I think that you should not quite but you should go to the dentist who likes you- you gave you the job and tell him about the behavior of his other employees towards you. Most likely he will talk to her/them and tell them to basically "back off." If this doesnt work than I think u should go up to the woman who is bothering you and tell her something nicely that basically tells her that she is lucky to be paid so much and have someone like u doing her work so she should start appreciating what she has and not take it for granted. I had a job like that and it was difficult but if you are not happy after so much than i think that u should look for another job on ur spare time but keep ur current job so that ur still getting paid..... i hope this helped!

I would quit. I mean immediately start looking for work. You can work for some temp agencies and get better treatment and more work for that matter. Your young, dont let this stress you out.

Sounds horrible. Quit.

Quit. You are way too young to be so unhappy... which is what ultimately all that matters and your mom will never begrudge you for wanting to be happy.

Quit gogogogo

Cool Story Bro

Look for another job for the summer, and if you find one, quit.

yes quit, people arent treating you very well and dont get paid much and you dont really like it. This is what I do when I am not sure about something and I think this will help you.Get some paper and a pen way out the pros and cons of this job. By the sound of things there is way more cons. So your young and free and you need money- like us all. Get a job you enjoy and be in a environment wre you are well treated. So if you think its right(and by the sound of things you do) Stuff that job and move on and enjoy whatever job you choose thats the main thing - and making money ! hope this helped but dont feel pressured. Do what your you feel is right

I initially clicked this question to tell you that it'd be stupid to quit, but I've changed my mind. Few possibilities. 1) You should always check if you'll be paid more if you're taking on more work than stated in your agreement/contract. I would personally ask for a raise of some sort at the very least. Just do it politely and keep chasing them up about it. 2) The only way to 'get back' at the other assistant is to be extremely nice. And I mean like, OTT nice. Put up with her crap with a smile, be the golden child loved by everyone in that place - no one can say a bad word about you and that is THE most important thing. In fact, you could probably try to delegate jobs to her when your hands are full, and just bustle off and see if she actually does it. Pretty soon she'll look like the lazy inactive one. Doesn't matter if you're blamed, no one will believe her. 3) If you quit, get a good feedback from your dentist and use it to find a new job. VERY VERY important that you don't leave on a bad note. Be loveable/sympathetic. Personally I would only quit if it was something I 'couldn't handle', and I can handle alot. Abuse means nothing to me.
