Whats the point in buying a PC over console gaming?
-
Well heres what happend, I sold my PS3 a few months ago; about now I have gotten bored without gaming and was going to buy a gaming device again... I was getting all excited and thought building my own gaming pc would be great or even buying a gaming pc for like £500-700. I told my mum abotu the idea and she made a very valid point, she said "whats the point if a ps3 can play games aswell and its cheaper". Now that may sound stupid to alot of you but considering a PS3 is about £200 or less and a gaming pc is like £500 atleast what would the point of me buying a gaming pc be? I dont play any games like world of warcraft or minecraft so thats pointless. Most games id play would be on both console and pc so surely because my friends have console and its cheaper thats what i should do? I am not trying to bash pc gaming as personally I think it looks amazing :P I wanted to get a pc to game and because i thought it would look cool and i wanted to start up a youtube channel again.. Why is a pc better than console gaming bearing in mind I am in no way a 'geek' although i am not sure whether thats relevant...

Answer:
I am console gamer and even though I have a high spec PC I dont play games on it. I have street fighter, garys mod and skyrim, saints row the third and GTA IV installed on MY PC and the only reason I got them was for mods, I have these games on the xbox 360 as well and I mostly play them on the 360 and use the PC versions just for mods. So if you are into modding then PC is great. PCs also have better graphics than a PS3 and the xbox 360 and you can download texture packs and other mods to make the graphics even better. PC games are cheaper than xbox 360 and PS3. A new game for the PS3 and the 360 will cost £40 - £45 and the same game on the same day for the PC will cost £20-£25, this is because the game developers dont have to pay royalty fee. Game developers have to pay Sony or Microsoft when they make games for PS3 or 360 but no one owns the PC so they dont have to pay any fee.

PC gaming is far superior by far in just about every way. You can also buy quite a formidable gaming machine on Ebay for peanuts. To add to this there is no 'membership fee' to pay as with xboxLive because it's free, you can also use the excellent SteamCloud for multiplayer and cheap download titles. The PC will have up-to-date and upgradeable graphics hardware and software whereas the consoles will have stable versions of old tech inside. Hard drives are now measured in Tb not Gb, Graphics card memory is measured in Gb. Consoles just can't compete with that. I find I get much better and smoother control with PC too rather that using a controller. The only downside to PC gaming is that to get the best you need Windows, as Linux isn't really supported for games. Shame.

1) Graphics. 2) Community. 3) Cheap, if you build your own. 4) Functionality, BF3 one minute, Youtube the next. 5) The Xbox 720 is about to be launched, so I wouldn't get a console now.

Pc gaming has an advantage over console gaming for various reasons, the only downsides being cost and console exclusive games (the latter problem being very minor): Firstly, pc games can be a lot easier to obtain. Many pc games nowadays are available to buy off the internet and download directly to your computer via services such as steam, and due to no shipping costs, physical instruction manual or box, these games can be much cheaper. Secondly, many games play substantially better on the pc (especially first person shooters and strategy games), as the mouse enables freedom of movement and accuracy. Thirdly, in many pc games you can tweak the graphics to suit your pc. If your pc is of the highest quality, you can turn the graphics above those of console standard. And lastly, it's just convenient - a gaming pc can be used both as a gaming platform and a regular personal computer, having access to the internet, utilities, etc. I hope this helps you evaluate pc gaming better.

Pros: Cheaper games, RELATIVELY better graphics (look up Kara PS3 Demo), does more than a gaming console. Cons: More expensive ($500 for a video card I can get 2 PS3s for that), more maintenance, generally has a shorter lifetime than a console. Its this way: a console now is something you play games on that happens to do other things A pc is something that does multiple things mainly web browsing and work, that just so happens to play games.

Just preference really. I use this computer for multiple things, including the little bit of games I like, so for me it makes more sense. But if you'd rather game on a console then it makes more sense to put the money there and simply have an average computer for all the non-game things you do on it.

You can play more platforms on a PC, all you need is the right emulators, so if you used to like Mega Drive, Commodore, Spectrum games then you can play those, you can also play PC games. But on a PS3 you can only play PS3 games.

Advantages of the PS3: More friends highest graphics probably bigger TV Netflix Advantages of the PC: Better multitasking More memory Both games from PS3 and XBox 360 on it Modding for games You can also use the PC for everyday stuff too and not just gaming I have a PS3 and a great PC. I have Skyrim for both of them and it was a lot better for the PC because in the end on PS3 the game file was so huge that the game was lagging and crashed about every hour. And the PC, I have a bunch of really cool graphic mods and extras and it is really great. Plus, if you have it for Steam, you can look online while playing the game and look up a guide for a quest or something. Hope this helped
