Can I paint masonite?

How to get oil paint off a masonite pallet?

  • On my pallet i left oil paint sitting there for a while and i can't get it off.. I know i can scrape it off with a pallet knife but it takes forever.. can i soak it in turpentine or something? i've gotten lazy with cleaning off the pallet and now the pallet is covered in oil paint.

  • Answer:

Get rid of it and get a glass one...! http://www.danielsmith.com/Item--i-G-421-010 Then get a glass scraper at the hardware store. PS The glass scraper might work on your masonite board. There is a razor blade in it. Safety glass from an auto glass shop is also good and I know some people who use old mirrors from the thrift store.

If you soak the palette in turpentine you will ruin it. The turps will soak into it and degrade the material and the solvent will always leach into your paint. Masonite is not that expensive. Get a new palette.

soaking in turpentine is not a good Idea , I guess you should get a new palette . if you can't afford it, you can use a normal window glass if you have or a smooth piece of wood or hard white plastic or hard white metal ... you can use everything but make sure that it is white , if not you won't be able to see the colors well.

If still wet, scrape it off with a pallette knife, and then linseed oil. If it has dried scrape it off with an old table knife, and them linseed the pallette. It is is really hard, you will have to chip it away as best you can. but always follow with linseed oil to keep the pallette wood 'soft'. moist.
