How do you properly treat a burn?
-
Call me stupid, but this morning I was making myself some coffee and instead of pouring the water into the cup... I poured it on my hand! Immediately after that happend I put neosporin on the burn, but then the burning sensation got really bad. I've been icing my hand for the past two hours, but that only releaves the pain temporarily. How can I get rid of this burning sensation? How can I properly treat this burn properly so it doesn't leave a scar or scab up?

Answer:
Neosporin is more cuts, not burns. And you do not want to put ice on it.....that's why it is still burning. From what I remember in first aid, you are supposed to run your hand under cold water if it is a minor burn, but if it is blistering, you want to put it under cool to lukewarm water.....after that, you can put some burn ointment on your hand....you should have some in a first aid kit. If not you can get ointment at your local pharmacy. You can put Neosporin on the burn after you have treated it with the burn ointment so the area does not get infected. As the other person answered "Neosporin is for treating burns" then says so it doesn't get infected.....it's to fight infection, not TREAT the burn......

You should immediately run the burned area under cold water, either pouring it over or running water from the tap over it. Do that for about a minute, then ice it for a few minutes, After that, then pat it dry (don't rub it), put some antiseptic on it (like neosporin) and lightly cover it with a gauze bandage. Neosporin is for burns. You put it on them to keep any bacteria from infecting it in case the burnt skin breaks open. DO NOT put butter or oil on the burn. That is an old wive's tale that can actually make the burn worse.

Well instead of putting anything on it, you should have just ran it under cold water for a few minutes. Avoid putting any greasy things because they keep in the heat instead of letting it out. After you ran it under cold water for 5-10 minutes, wet a gauze pad (or for larger areas an old rag or Ace bandage) with cold milk and let it sit until it gets warm. That should take care of the burning temporarily but the only medication for it to perminately go away is time:/ sorry, i hope your hand feels better!
