What are some really good plays to read?

'Glengarry Glen Ross' by David Mamet is AMAZING Any of the Ubu Roi plays by Alfred Jarry are an interesting escape from the ordinary Moliere's 'Tartuffe' is one of the funniest plays I've ever read 'Wit' by Margaret Edson - an exploration of the singular 'God of Carnage' (much better on stage than on the screen) by Yasmina Reza Mamet's 'Speed the Plow' August Wilson's work Sam Shepard's work Christopher Durang's work The Greeks (good to see where it began) Marlowe's 'Dr. Faustus' (any Marlowe!!!!) Dekker's 'The Shoemaker's Holiday' -- very funny Webster's 'The Duchess of Malfi' -- very bawdy Ford's 'Tis Pity She's a Whore' (and, I have to say, you may want to someday reconsider Shakespeare - he's the source, after all. And he's really not that deep - so much of his stuff is deliciously vulgar and fun - just go with it) See plays whenever you can (beats reading them and gives you a real sense of the language and possibilities
