What are some good serious plays where I could find a monologue?

How to find a monologue that is not overdone?

  • I'm tearing out my hair trying to find a monologue that is NOT overdone for a 20-something/early 30s male. I went to my local library and checked out about thirty contemporary plays that I had never read before (generally from the last thirty/forty years - and no Miller, Williams, etc). I've been scouring the plays for monologues , and then reading the full play if I find one I like. After reading it I'll do a bit of research on the Internet and - what ho' - there it is on an overdone monologue list! So I go back to the drawing board (uhm...reading chair?) and try again with a new play. Wash, rinse repeat. Ugh. I just can't seem to catch a break. So - instead of asking for a list of overdone monologues or for specific monologue ideas - does anyone have any tips or techniques how I could find a non-overdone monologue? What do you do if that monologue that speaks to you - that you worked hard to find - is considered overdone? And how do you approach performing an overdone monologue in auditions so that you don't necessarily get tossed aside as an amateur?

  • Answer:

Well... you're pretty much doing what most people do to find monologues! Reading and finding it through there! What kinds of monologues are you doing? They may actually not be overdone! Even if you do pick an overdone one make it your own, make it different, interpret it in a different way- but only if you can explain why you've done certain things with it! Good luck :)
